The Great Green Race is
Going to Greensburg Kansas

THE GREAT GREEN RACE LLC is a powerful platform integrating a variety of dynamic forces in our economy to work together toward restoring our natural resources and clean living including: social networking, education, standards set by consumers, business, finance, banking, credit and savings, green products promotion, incentives, rebates and grants.

Greensburg, Kansas is the first city in the US in which THE GREAT GREEN RACE plans to demonstrate this platform. When completed, the city of Greensburg will be known as “Greensburg-GreenTown” in that the majority of the town will be built to LEED Platinum level standards. The Discovery Channel is filming a series, "Eco-Town," about Greensburg that will air this year starring Leonardo DiCaprio on their new network, Planet Green.

We are looking for donations of certified green building materials such as lumber, supplies, roofing, and all products for finishing of stick built, panelized or modular homes for homeowners of all income levels. Several corporations and green building industry professionals, companies, and builders have expressed interest in being a part of this green humanitarian effort. Many have already jumped on board by entering the race for Greensburg with firm commitments of time, money, and products. This is a "people to people" action that we intend to duplicate throughout the USA.

Many major national publications will be following the progress of building Greensburg- GreenTown, giving Green product companies a unique platform on which to highlight their products nationwide in this effort for creating the FIRST Green Town in America. Ogden Publications, publisher of Natural Home and Mother Earth Magazine with a circulation of 3.5 million, will play a significant role in the building of the first LEED certified, renewable energy home called the “Welcome and Information Center.” Always Build Green of Norwalk, CT will also play a major role in constructing the “Welcome and Information Center” through the generous donation from Ogden Publications toward construction of the first building on Greensburg’s Main Street. Ogden will pave the way for more “green” conscious companies to show their commitment to give back to our environment by showing their support of the first Green Town in the US.

Donations are a key to this initiative since for many residents insurance did not cover the costs of rebuilding.

“I see us as being kind of a living science museum,” says Daniel Wallach, director of Greensburg Greentown, a non-profit formed to help the town make the ‘green dream’ come true. “People are going to be able to come from around the country and see a model community of the future, and in a scale that you can’t do in a big city.” Wallach’s organization is also shouldering some of the burden in raising the other kind of ‘green.’ The town will need to come up with several million of the $45 to $60 million required for rebuilding and greening city buildings and services. FEMA only covers 75 percent of the expense to return facilities to their pre-storm condition. “A lot of those buildings were pretty old,” says City Treasurer Pam Reves. “They weren't worth much, so we're looking at other sources like loans, state help and donations.” Plenty Magazine

In response, THE GREAT GREEN RACE is spearheading an initiative called “Greenwich to Greensburg” connecting Greensburg, Kansas with Greenwich, Connecticut. Our “G-Race (short for Green Race) Helping Hands” project will be building three Eco-Friendly “GREEN” HOSPITALITY HOMES in Greentown's Eco-Village paralleling our own simultaneous Extreme Green Makeover in Greenwich, Connecticut. Our documentary film crew will capture both events, giving special credit to those who are giving their time, products and presence, which we hope to have happen simultaneously. In addition, the Discovery Channel is already on the ground in Greensburg documenting the ongoing effort. This will focus the nation's attention once again on this small town in Heartland America in need.
