Not everyone can start from scratch. But, as builders of homes (some of them modest, some luxurious) and also as proprietors of Green Home Solutions, a green retail and consulting firm promoting methods of building more ecologically friendly residences, we are finding that more and more homeowners want to go green when they build a new house or remodel.

Always Build Green.Com and our sister company are currently involved in several green projects. Read about some of these projects below and please consider the option of building Green for a healthier and more energy efficient planet.
Project: Westport, CT
This current project in Westport CT is going very green. The home has geothermal for all its heating and cooling needs, making the home gas and oil free, which equates to freedom from fossil fuels. It will have spray foam insulation creating an additional 40% savings for the home's heating and cooling needs, while creating a healthier interior air quality for this Green Home.
Enviroshake® is the roof of choice for this home situated on the waterfront of the Long Island Sound. The hand split cedar look is very poplar and more importantly it is made of 100% recycled material, and is maintenance free. High quality Enviroshake® roofs provide the look of weathered cedar without the traditional wait time. Installers find this product a joy to work with, and the finished roof makes a beautiful, environmental friendly contribution to any home.

Enviroshake® replicates the look of an antique cedar shake roof and will provides many advantages to the consumer with its enhanced physical properties. Major benefits include increased durability, UV protection, wind and hail resistance combined with superior mold, mildew and insect resistant properties. When you consider all the benefits, Enviroshake® is an attractive alternative to a traditional cedar roof.

Enviroshake® can be installed efficiently with less waste than traditional cedar, does not require any pretreatment, and once installed, is maintenance free. Enviroshake® roofs will retain their physical properties and look for decades without all of the added expense of preservatives and coatings associated with traditional cedar.

As you can see the color of the siding and the stone foundation will look wonderful with the roof color. Check back often to see the build progress of this very Eco-friendly home. Completion of this house will be spring of 2008. If you have any questions about this or other builds please call our main showroom at 203-846-6060. Do something green today and help save our planet.

A Fossil Fuel Free Home
The home incorporates specialized rooms, both small and large, for activities such as meditation, music, sewing, and exercise. The kitchen, with views of the lake, is a fabulous chef's workspace with easy access to both the breakfast nook and the more formal dining room.
Views are captured with double sets of French doors from each side of the main living area. Included is a fireplace with energy efficient insert, a wet bar for entertaining, and a separate, more reserved, television viewing area. Decking around the rear of the home is accessible from most rooms in the house. From there the water views can be captured, as well as from the three season sun space.
Geothermal and grid-tied solar systems handle the energy requirements without the use of any oil or gas, making the home 'fossil fuel free'. The residence provides for all the needs of a couple with green values from the 'Baby Boomer' generation, about to become 'Empty Nesters'.

Project: Rowayton, CT
This Green Makeover has a wonderfully redesigned using all of the existing structure. The cost savings was tremendous, the exterior face lift and all new interior transitioned this existing home into a very nice shade of green. All around the outside of the home there are many details that make this a notable design.
The homeowner played a key role in the design of this home, was very helpful in the selection of all Eco Friendly products to be used. Bringing in natural light has decreased the monthly electrical bill and the windows have been placed in the right spaces to optimize these benefits and savings.
In the Northeast windows that bear the ENERGY STAR label (which are required to include features that reduce heat loss) have been installed. These Energy Star windows reduce heat loss using glass with a Low-E coating: a microscopically thin metal coating applied to the glass. This coating works in the winter to help heat the home and in reverse, in the summer helps keep it cool.
Spray foam in basement walls and floor joist will reduce heating & cooling bills by 40 to 50 percent based on previous energy consumption. This basement will also have healthy walls. Dragonboard has a class A fire rating, great sound quality, is waterproof and will never produce mold spores or fungus. When finishing a basement, Dragonboard is a must.
Cotton bat insulation on all interior walls will make the inside sound quality of this home superior. This has been a well thought out plan and design. Check back to see it completed. Radiant heat will also help make this home more energy efficient.
Thinking outside the box has helped bring this remodel to a higher level of design and fit. By opting for a completely open floor plan on the first floor, this home will have a traffic flow pattern that works. Using exposed steal has allowed us to remove the inner barring wall, creating a much more open and welcoming space. Check back often to see the completion of this project scheduled for completion in January 2008.

Project: Darien, CT
This great little house in Darien, CT is going through a Green Makeover. For years the homeowner has complained of a drafty home. After stripping off the existing siding we found out why. The discovery sparked a immediate fix that created and instant savings in their monthly heating and cooling expenses, up to a 50% reduction annually.
Once all the existing siding was removed we found out why the home would not retain heat and was costly to cool in the summer. There was no insulation on the South side of the home. This was a problem we corrected immediately. After reviewing our options we put a energy efficient plan into action to address the problem.

After applying new house wrap, we went around the entire home cutting open a one foot high hole to allow us to use spray foam insulation in the walls. This process is usually done from the inside of the home before sheet rock is installed. But because there is no inside work being done on this project, we had to achieve our goals by thinking outside the box. We are always up to the challenge, will figure out a way to make a Green Change happen, and that is just one of the ways we work with our clients in doing our part to help save the planet.

The spraying of this home achieved many beneficial things for the homeowner. First, we made the home 100% more energy efficient. Spraying added much needed structural framing strength to the home, built at the turn of the century with 2 x 4 construction. The home is located on a busy road and the homeowners love the sound proofing qualities of the insulation, which has eliminated much of the outside noise. Couple this with a instant reduction in heating and cooling needs, and the homeowners are very satisfied with their Green Home Renovation.
All cut back smooth and ready to reinstall the exterior sheeting. We feel it is very important to keep our job sites clean and in order. With a host of products and services available we are sure we can solve any need you may have now or in the future. There are many products and methods you should look into before you start any remodeling project. The planet is changing and it is very important we all do our part. Spay foaming your home will greatly reduce your need for fossil fuel.
Chris is finishing up the south side of the home and will continue around the house until it is completed. This part of the project took three days to complete and was well worth the time and money to make this home more energy efficient. Call the showroom today to receive a free evaluation and estimate (203) 846-6060. For new construction or remodeling you must consider spray foaming your home.
All buttoned up and ready for siding. We are applying maintenance free Eco-Friendly
cement fiber board siding, trim and soffits. The need for painting any of these products will not exist. Check back often and watch as these healthy, energy efficient products and methods transform this house into a more Eco-Friendly Green Home. Project: Roslyn Heights, New York
Look close and you will not see what is right in front of your very eyes. This wonderful home of our good friends Jane and Stan has been energy Eco-Friendly sense 2005. More than 75% of this home's electricity comes from the sun for free. Yes FREE. Their electrical bill runs about $75.00 dollars per month.
After climbing up on the children's swing set the source of power comes into view. It fades into the roof line seamlessly and unless you are 10 feet tall you would never see this efficient energy source. It has been maintenance free and performed flawlessly for the past several years and will continue to do so for years to come. Free electric, imagine that!

How does it work?

The Sun produces a range of energy which we can only see a small part of as visible white light. Solar panels turn another part, or wavelength, of the light into electricity that can be harnessed. A photovoltaic cell (PV Cell) produces electricity on the principle that electricity will be produced when two semiconductors are exposed to a particular wavelength of light. Groups of PV Cells are linked together to form panels, the bigger the panel and the more cells, the greater the amount of electricity can be produced.

How do you heat your swimming pool water?

An added bonus to this Eco-Friendly home, there pool is heated by the sun and the water that is in it. The system on the roof runs water through it and the natural sunlight heats the water to a 8 to 10 degree higher temperature than it would be. That water is then recycled back into the pool rising the overall temperature of the water. Jane has been helping homeowners and business owners understand how to get grant and incentive finical rewards for solar systems for a few years now, call the showroom at 203-846-6060 to get in touch with her.

Project: Stamford CT
This kitchen has many Eco-Friendly options, from the paint to the floor. The homeowner played a huge part in the deign of this kitchen and it was a pleasure to work with him. The unusual lines in the ceiling are just a small part of the uniqueness of this project.
One year after we completed this project there was a major flood from a water pipe brake. After careful planning we were able to remove all the flooring and re mediate for mold which had already started to grow under the flooring. It is very important that any time you have water damage you test the area for mold.
Custom doors made from FSC certified wood, helped bring this project to completion. Not everyone will go the extra mile this homeowner did, but if we all do a little it will make a difference and now more than ever we need to make a change in the way we build and remodel our homes.

Project: Darien, CT

Give us a call at 203-846-6060 to find out when our next free Eco-Friendly workshop is.
